Sunset at JEEP
Last week at work. Focusing on my laptop for hours, I did not realize that it was already 7pm. Perfect time for some shots of the sunset with my new camera lens.
Ugandan Scouts – Kaazi National Campsite
As I have been a boy scout in Germany for over 15 years, I wanted to stay in contact with scouts even here in Uganda. Thus I contacted the Uganda Scouts Association on my arrival, just to check whether there are some scout activities to be found in Uganda. As it turned out there are and so I went on my first small trip with the head administration of the national scout association. … Weiterlesen →
A Liter of Light
Millions of families in developing countries still live in the dark. Even at day dozens of homes lack of light because they are easy built without any windows and remain powerless.
A few weeks ago I came across a really nice project called “A Liter of Light”:
‘MyShelter Foundation’ envisions sharing to underprivileged communities an economically- and ecologically-sustainable source of light that will provide an immediate solution to our fellowmen’s problems.
In their project “A Liter of Light” the foundation is promoting and caring out a sustainable lighting project which aims to bring an eco-friendly solar bottle bulb to disprivileged communities on the Philippines. The solar bottle bulb is a contraption made from recyclable PET bottles, CG corrugated sheets and a solution of water, chlorine and salt. By using these readily available materials, the project is empowering the population to be able to utilize a cheap and long-term alternative to electric light.
Once being aware about this project whilst travelling through Uganda, I really wanted to integrate it sooo much into JEEP. Especially after having seen all the dark rooms and houses on the field trip to Mbale and on the trip to the middle of nowhere, I wanted to press this project ahead in Uganda.
So here we are. Today we installed the first solar bottle bulb in our bottle house as a test installation to see how it works and to see if we can reach the power of 55 Watts as “A Litre of Light” is telling..
Spending a weekend in the middle of nowhere
Right after our field trip to Mbale I was able to visit Arne and Nina, two Solivol volunteers who are staying near Bududa at the slopes of Mount Elgon. It was quite interesting to see how they are living in such a simple way without power and water supply, far away from any civilization. We spent a great time over there enjoying the nature and environment including a day trip to the cliffs of Mount Wanale, walking like 30km through great environment and lots of bizarre and colourful rock formations where people live really decentralized in small self-built mud houses. After joining two remote lagoons … Weiterlesen →

Alles geben!

Sipi Falls
During our field trip to Mbale, I was able to shortly visit the famous Sipi Falls, located near Mount Elgon. Sipi Falls which are actually a series of three tall waterfalls all plunging along the lower slopes of Mt Elgon (the 4th highest peak in Africa shared between Eastern Uganda and Western Kenya) are an absolute must to visit. Unfortunately I could only visit the second waterfall which is said to be 75m tall (tallest fall is about 100m). Anyway it was a great view and experience to see those wonderful fall. Even more, beyond the base of the falls, the trail to the falls climbs steeply towards a small cave with a view back at the main Sipi Falls. Soooo great

Field Trip to Mbale
Providence of training in building energy saving stoves and solar installations led us to our next field trip to Mbale in the eastern region of Uganda. This trip was carried out in cooperation with another NGO from Denmark, Seniors Without Borders, established in 2004 with the purpose that active seniors use their experience in helping poor and oppressed people, working with the vision that projects in progress must contain a local basis/connection, and that “help to self-help” is the road forward.
Their project called “Sustainable Energy With A Social Profile” (Bæredygtig energi med en social profil) has several purposes. Target is to establish a sustainable energy supply in four villages (Bufumbo, Kapchorwa, Bududa, Sironko) around the city of Mbale which can improve the living conditions in the area in general but most specifically for women and underprivileged groups like widows and orphans. ‘Seniors Without Borders’ intend to reduce the consumption of charcoal and firewood to decrease deforestation and health problems (,especially among women). Furthermore they want to evaluate local so-called SACCOs (Saving and Credit Co-operative Organisations) so that those are able to undertake collective investment and maintenance tasks within their community, especially in terms of energy. The project is developed in partnership with CBOs in the four villages and in collaboration with Farm Mountain Randers, Care Denmark, Randers Millennium and us - JEEP Uganda.
Field trip Tororo District or: Lighting Africa
Finally I can drop some lines about my first field trip with J.E.E.P. to Tororo (eastern part of Uganda). I guess, photos are more important to you…
Anyway, here is what the trip was about: On Tuesday 1st, we started our trip from Kampala to Tororo in order to provide rural primary schools with solar systems and the neighbouring village people with solar lamps.
